In August 1919 three families began holding Christian Science services on Sundays at the home of two practitioners in Attleboro. As the news spread through the Attleboros that Sunday services were being held, others interested in Christian Science asked to attend. In February 1920 this group voted to find a suitable meeting place at a central location and, accordingly, Odd Fellows Hall on Bank Street, Attleboro, was engaged for Sunday services with the first service being held on March 21, 1920. In the month following a Sunday School was started and later in the year an additional room in the same building was obtained for all our activities, including a Reading Room.
On January 7, 1921 it was voted to organize as a Christian Science Society and steps were taken in this direction. We became Christian Science Society of Attleboro in August 1921. During the ensuing two years continued growth and progress were realized, and it became the desire of the members to become a church. After necessary application to The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, MA, on June 8, 1923 the Board of Directors of The Mother Church granted us a change of title to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Attleboro.
The next logical step was to procure a permanent church home, and a committee was chosen to investigate suitable building sites. Shortly thereafter they learned that All Saints Episcopal Church, 85 County Street, Attleboro, was for sale, and it was voted to purchase that property. The first service was held on April 10, 1927 with the church filled to overflowing. Through the consecrated work of committees and members this church was dedicated on October 18, 1953. Dedication is always the goal of a Christian Science church for this means that the church is free from all indebtedness.
On March 28, 1959 the County Street edifice was badly damaged by fire. The next morning being Easter cordial invitations came from every church in the city and we gratefully held our service at the Chapel in Second Congregational Church. Thereafter, space was lovingly provided by the local YMCA for all our services. Since it seemed unwise to attempt a rebuilding program, a Building Committee was appointed with the express purpose to go forward to establish a new church at a new location. In March 1960 we opened a downtown Reading Room at 7 Pleasant Street.
After much dedicated work a site was purchased at the corner of North Main Street and Wamsutta Road in Attleboro. An architect was engaged to draw up plans for a new church along New England Colonial lines, and a local contractor was hired to commence construction. Ground was broken on August 1, 1963 and the work proceeded in a most orderly and harmonious manner. Through the unified efforts of members and friends the church was complete and ready for our first service on May 3, 1964. This church was dedicated on Sunday, May 23, 1965.
